Articles of Governance
Official Standards of SustenanceArticle I: Independence, Originality & Quality
Art. 1.0The MCR Lunch Club exists to seek out, assess, and celebrate the finest lunch offerings Manchester has to offer. We are committed to independent venues first and foremost, championing originality, quality, and local character over the predictability of large chains. Exceptions may be made where a new chain enters the area and warrants official verification by the Lunch Club Chairs.
Article II: Consistency & The Two-Visit Rule
Art. 2.0No venue earns its place in the Lunch Club rotation lightly. Each must be visited on at least two separate occasions and deliver satisfactory outcomes on both. Consistency is king. A single sub-par performance constitutes desecration of the Chairs and may result in immediate ejection from the approved list.
Article III: Value as a Core Principle
Art. 3.0Value is a core principle. Price range will always be considered alongside quality, portion, and overall experience. We recognise excellence at all price points, but extravagance without merit will not pass inspection.
Article IV: City Centre Jurisdiction & The 2.5-Mile Radius
Art. 4.0Within Manchester city centre, no distance is too far for proper evaluation. Beyond the centre, noteworthy venues within a 2.5-mile radius may be inducted where they demonstrate exceptional standards worthy of special recognition.
Article V: Impartial Authority & Integrity of the Chairs
Art. 5.0The Club is open to all who wish to join in the pursuit of lunchtime excellence. However, members must respect the impartial authority of the Lunch Club Chairs and refrain from attempting to unduly influence their verdicts.

Official Status Classifications
Approved
Prize WinnerVenue has survived the Chairs’ scrutiny by delivering consistent, good-value, characterful lunches across multiple visits. It has earned the highest honour in Manchester lunching: the right to be returned to.
Under Consideration
Venue has shown enough promise to warrant serious attention, but has not yet earned a final verdict from the Chairs. It sits in the waiting chamber of judgement, pending further evidence, appetite, and official lunching scrutiny.
To Be Assessed
Venue has entered the Lunch Club’s field of vision, but has not yet faced the full judgement of the Chairs. Its fate remains undecided until proper inspection confirms whether it is worthy of approval, rejection, or reluctant tolerance.
If We Must
Venue is not celebrated, but tolerated: acceptable only when circumstance, convenience, or lack of better options forces the Club’s hand. It remains outside true approval, granted not honour, but reluctant permission.
Rejected Venues
Venue has failed to meet the standards of the Chairs, whether through poor value, weak quality, lack of character, or the unforgivable sin of inconsistency. It is removed from the sacred lunch rotation and may only return through exceptional redemption.
Gone But Not Forgotten
Venue once held a place in the Club’s affections, but is no longer available to be judged, revisited, or relied upon. Its doors may be closed, but its legend remains in the lunching annals.
